Re: POW Death Wm David Argabright 42Va Inf

Not sure if anyone will read this. I stumbled on it looking for other Argabright stuff. Here is what I have from my archives. If your still interested please contact me Via e-mail at bottom for further info. Not sure I will check back here anytime soon so please contact me. William David Argabright was my Great Great Grand Father. My aunt kept documentation of our family and she passed info about David on to me. So my info is from word of mouth via my direct ancestors. My aunt said she received all her info from her grandfather who was one of David's sons "John Henry Argabright" and other elders, plus some news clippings. Here is what I have:

Enlisted in Co. B-42nd Va. Infantry of the Confederate Army on 5/21/1861 for one year. (Floyd county). Reorganized and commanded by
Capt. Henry Lane - enlisted again on March 15, 1862. Confederate records at Richmond only say he died in service..

The following was partly copied from "The Floyd Press" by Source and from "Grandma Argabright" who said he contracted fever and dysentery from being a POW and died
at home near the end of the war.

He was wonderful Christian man. His captain always called on him to pray before a battle.

He was captured near Strasburg on Oct. 10, 1864. Prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Md. Exchanged March 18, 1865. Died at home in Floyd Co. in
1865. He was buried in the old Huff Cemetery on a cold frosty morning. The children had no shoes and the old colored woman heated boards for
them to stand on at the cemetery."

Lane's command first saw service in the late summer and fall of 1861 in N.W. Va. under W. W. Loring and Robert E. Lee, and in December became a part of Gen. Stonewall Jackson's command at Winchester and remained under that illustrious commander until his death in 1863, participating in Jackson's severe winter campaign in Bath and Rodney and in Jackson's Valley campaign in the spring and early summer of 1862, and then with Jackson to the 7 days battle around Richmond in June and July, 1862, and still with Jackson at Cedar Mt. and Rappahannock, Brisows, second Manassas and Chantilly in August 1862,
with Jackson at Frederick City, Harper's Ferry and Sharpsburg in Sept. 1862, with Jackson in his last battle at Chancellorsville in May
1863.

P.S. John Chapla, I read your book on the 42nd. Thanks much for putting that documentation together. George, John, Elisha and Samuel Argabright were my Great Great Great Uncles. My aunt said all 5 brothers enlisted for the war. Not sure if they are the the same ones in the 42nd but I think they are. I now Elisha, Samual, and William were.
