Re: Maddox at Ft. Delaware and 3d Md. Cav (US)

Hello John:

I have been away from my research files for the past two weeks or I would have responded earlier. My research notes on the 3rd Maryland Cavalry were copied from the "History and Roster of Maryland Volunteers, War of 1861-5" issued by the State of Maryland in 1898. Companies D, E, F & G of the 3rd Maryland Cavalry were said to have been largely recruited from among the disgruntled POWs in the Confederate prison pen at Fort Delaware. I did not find the surname MADDOX or MADDEN listed in any of the company rosters published by the State of Maryland.

I checked the NPS Soldiers & Sailors system and noted that a CMSR exists for Simeon (Simon) F. MADDOX, Company G, 3rd Maryland Cavalry. I guess you will have to get a copy of that CMSR from the National Archives.

At footnote.com under MADDOX in the 42nd Virginia Infantry, I found Robert, Nathaniel, John W.,Sr. and John W.,Jr. - all members of Company I. Only Nathaniel and Robert are listed in the NPS Index for the CMSR. I discovered upon examining these CMSRs that the name MADDEN was used on several of the POW records. None of these four men were POWs at Fort Delaware, but MADDEN is closer to the MAUDDON/MAUDDIN that appears in the Fort Delaware database.

The Fort Delaware Society database shows that Private S. F. MAUDDON (MAUDDIN), Company E, 42nd Virginia Infantry was captured at Gettysburg on 3 JUL 1863. He joined the 3rd Maryland Cavalry on special orders from the War Department. This limited information was extracted from NARA Tape 40, a National Archives microfilm roll pertaining to Fort Delaware only. However, when I searched the NPS CMSR Index (Soldiers & Sailors) for that name, I found no matching entry in the 42nd Virginia Infantry. I examined the CMSRs posted on footnote.com for the 42nd Virginia Infantry and did not find the name or initials to match Simeon/Simon/Samuel MADDOX/MADDEN.

I assume that your detailed information on Simeon/Samuel MADDOX, Company I, 42nd Virginia Infantry showing his capture and transit to Fort Delaware came from records that do not appear in the Compiled Military Service Records posted at footnote.com, or listed in the Index at the NPS website.

I will be most interested in the documentation that you have which shows all of the Fort Delaware related records for Simeon/Simon/Samuel MADDOX/MADDEN of the 42nd Virginia Infantry. And I will be interested in what the CMSR for this soldier in the 3rd Maryland Cavalry shows as well.
