I note that Captain Semmes commanded the Confederate gunboat, DIANA, in April, 1863.
Now, before anyone rejects this comment out of hand, I advise you to note how the statement is constructed, and to go to volume 20 of the ORN to verify this fact. He lost the vessel, which had previously been the USS DIANA, captured by the Confederates the month before, in combat with Union forces on a river in Louisiana.
