I believe in the book Gray Thunder by Thomas Campbell, The CSS Alabama caputered a US merchant ship with a Northern slave holder and his slaves from Delaware. Capt Siemmes freed the slave and offered him an enlistment aboard the Alabama, this freed northen slave was Davis White and went down with the ship during the battle with the USS Kersage. So I guess the arguement of granting CSA citizenship was also granted to freed northern slaves. From the text, it was suggested that Seaman White was given all the priviledges, rights, and pay as any other enlisted man aboard the ship.
