I want to believe that the 4 hour watches were standatd back during the war also,with 8 bells for the watch with the bell being rung at every 30 minutes by the Powder Monkey using a 30 minute hourglass. Very few Navy personell had watches, officers mostly and it would be bothersome for them to ring the bell, so the powder monkey when not at a battle station would have this job.
