According to this account, 4-hour on, 4 off, Port & Starboard, were the norm at sea. On blockade duty they might have gone to 3 & perhaps 4 watch sections.
What is interesting is they were, at times, dogging the 1600-2000 watches way back then to account for the evening meal hour.
