G'day, Hank. I have been involved in a large number of projects, including getting back to some of my older projects - perusing photographs of the Civil War Navy personnel, and trying to correct identifications. Even recent identification of some of these photos has been flawed, such as the KEARSARGE personnel, and even a photo claimed to be a new discovery of the crew of the ALABAMA, but which is clearly of a foreign Navy.
Anyway, to get back to the KEARSARGE photos and personnel, the photos taken just after the battle, were taken by the French photographer, Rondin, while the vessel was still at Cherbourg. The surgeon of the KEARSARGE at this time was John Mills Browne, who is shown in one or more photos of the officers. Some of the enlisted personnel have been identified, but very few, in proportion to the officers. In the photograph of the engineering department of the KEARSARGE (which can be seen at the Naval History web site), a web site has incorrectly identified many of the men as being the quartermasters and other non-engineering personnel. Even the sleeve rank insignia has been ignored on some of the men, and they have been wrongly identified. Medal of Honor recipient Joachim Pease has even been identified as one of the men, even though he looks nothing like Pease, who was shown as having sunken cheeks and older in appearance. However, at least we do have the identities of most of the officers shown correctly, thanks to other photos which exist from that time period.
