There are several photos of the officers and crew of the USS KEARSARGE, taken just after the battle off Cherbourg, in June, 1864. Most of the images of the officers have been identified, but only a couple of the enlisted personnel have accurately been identified. There is at least one web site that I have seen, where an attempt has been made to try and identify a large number of these enlisted personnel, but obviously with totally inaccurate results. Sleeve ratings and other factors have been ignored, and in one particular case, an enlisted man has been identified as an officer, indicating that the person who made the identification obviously has no knowledge of the uniform and insignia worn by officers.
Is anyone involved in thorough research on these photos of the USS KEARSARGE? I would like to discuss a number of aspects of the images, and identities.
