Re: Six-inch Dalgren Gun, Gunboat "Chattahoochee"

Mr. Hodges- Thank you for the informative reply.

Interesting. My involvement with Mortars began as an Infantry Medic, some of my most active time in the field being attached to the Combat Support Co. We had four tubes, 4.2 inch Chemical Mortars carried by Gamma Goats, tubes formally used by the 87th Cm Mortar Battalion to push inland from Normandy. The Humvee went out of acceptance this week, they couldn't get the powertrain right, this after years of usage. Chevrolet might benefit from the change.

Captains of the Ironclads attacking the Confederate works on the Great Ogheechee mention the technique of fragment measurement in order to determine that it was a 10" bore Mortar that was the deliverer. I believe that the direction of fire might have led the receivers to claim Mortars as the source.

The source of the information ascribed to Col. Shelby was an internet site that I was using in addendum to Volume XXXVIII of the Official Records. I don't have the address, search with keywords should bring up the site addressing the Siege of Atlanta. I put it on paper in my notes.

I have found no other mention of the use of Mortars in the Atlanta Campaign and am becoming increasingly skeptical of information posted on many sites.
