Re: Keeping a ships' powder dry:

Dave, I have also been doing a major study of the CSS SHENANDOAH, and especially her enlisted personnel (see link below, and other links) and I have been able to add quite a bit to the biographies of some of these personnel, thanks to scouring the Melbourne newspapers, as well as journal entries of the officers and other sources. As well, I have also found an interesting (but currently unverified) newspaper article relating to two brothers who were separated at the beginning of the war, but who both supposedly ended up as crew members aboard the SHENANDOAH (see my article, SAVED BY HIS BROTHER, at www.tfoenander.com).
I am still searching for other aspects of the history of the vessel, the personnel and other important data relating to these subjects.
Only a few weeks ago I was in Ballarat, Victoria, where some of the cruiser's officers stopped over, in February, 1865, and attended a ball and gathering at Craig's Royal Hotel, in that city. The hotel still stands, and is still as splendid as it would have been in 1865. Thanks to an entry in the journal of surgeon Charles Lining, as well as entries in the Ballarat newspapers of 1865, I was able to correct an assumption that the word "Royal" had been added to the name of the hotel in 1867, during the visit of a member of the English royal family, but these accounts show that the hotel was already named as "Craig's Royal Hotel" back in 1865, and probably before.
Anyway, I would be most happy to exchange data with you, and some newspaper articles I have, which are not shown in my pages online, on the cruiser.
