In the book 'Confederate Naval Forces on Western Waters' by R. Thomas Campbell, the author states that the Arkansas' engines were knocked off their mountings by an 11" bolt fired by the Hartford as it passed by on the evening after the Arkansas' run through the fleet. They couldn't see the Arkansas but fired at the gun flashes. He footnotes this to 'Battles and Leaders' vol. iii, page 577, "The Confederate Gunboata Arkasas" by Issac N. Brown.

He also goes on to state that the engines were re-mounted and describes an incident where the Arkansas left her moorings a few days later to attack the mortar scows above the city. As the Federal ironclads towed them away the Arkansas attempted to persue. However, one of the engines failed and the Arkansas made a complete circle before she was able to steer back to the city using lots of opposite rudder.
