hmmm. Interesting. The dog clutch designs I've seen would be on the main drive shafts. Without the ability to pin-wheel a propeller, the drag of the prop would put the vessel into a turn. Apparently the helm of the Arkansas could not compensate for this condition. I've never seen anything that indicated that the Arkansas' engines were cross-shafted. On the other hand, it was common during those days to call a twin-cylinder engine sharing an engine block a "twin-engine" or "two engines". Makes things quite confusing. Now I'm really curious about the Arkansas' power-plant. I'm just guessing, but I suspect that she also lacked a condenser, which would have increased fuel consumption. I wonder if she incorporated a "mud box" on the inlet side? You wouldn't see this on a bay or sea-going vessel.
