Re: how to verify my sailor/his record?

The Navy Rendezvous Reports, 1846-1884, are at the National Archives. Rendezvous Reports are similar to the enlistment papers of Regular Army soldiers. These reports list the name, rendezvous (recruitment station or vessel), dates of enlistment, where born, age at time of enlistment, and a physical description. The indexes are on microfilm:

Series T1098, Index to Rendezvous Reports Before and After the Civil War (1846-1861, 1865-1884).

Series T1099, Index to Rendezvous Reports during the Civil War (1861-1865).

I have a transcription of the muster rolls for the U. S. Steam Sloop "Monongahela" on my PA in the Civil War website at:

I checked, but did not see his name listed. Perhaps he was an officer; however, his name does not appear on the list of officers. Other ships I have worked with usually had more than one list of officers, but the Archives only had one list of officers for the "Monongahela."
