Just a small addition. I've found a newspaper account dated Cairo, September 4, 1861 saying in part, "The Federal gunboats Taylor (Tyler) and Lexington had an engagement off Hickman, Kentucky, this afternoon with the Confederate gunboat Yankee and two batteries on the Missouri shore, supported by about 1,500 Confederates, who also fired upon our boats. None of the enemy's shot took effect" (The Richmond Daily Dispatch, September 9, 1861 quoting an unspecified northern newspaper)
