You have to be a little careful about some of the river steamers. Some had their names changed and are referred by one name in the OR's and by their civilian names as common usage. Way's entry # 1881 (pg 153) lists an Equality as a stern-wheel packet with a wooden hull built at Paducah, Ky in 1860. She was a small boat of 90 tons. She was snagged and lost at Golconda, IL on May 11, 1861. Ways (#2970) states that the Jeff Davis was a small side-wheel packet lost at Satartia, Miss in 1850. The Lytle list says the same. There is a "Jefferson" listed as a sternwheel ferry built at Jeffersonville, Ind in 1858. She ran 146 tons and went to Confederate registry in 1862. Off the lists in 1864. I wonder if they're not referring to the Jeff Thompson? She went down at the battle of Memphis. The only Yankee in ways was built in 1847 and went of the lists in 1852. I seem to remember that a tug at New Orleans had the name of Yankee and it was changed when the state siezed the vessel. Good luck.
