There has been a story passed down from one generation to another about a sunken Confederate boat in Natural Steps, Arkansas. The story goes that the confederates received information that Little Rock was about to be taken by Union forces and the boat was sunk at the small town of Natural Steps that lies on the Arkansas River. It was said to have held large amounts of gold and silver. It was sunk at Natural Steps because there is a natural formation along the Arkansas River where rocks make natural steps from atop a hill down into the Arkansas river. It was always used by river boats as a marker to show that Little Rock was close. It was sunk here so it could be found later below the formation. The Story goes on that three confederate soldiers died in the sinking of this ship and are now buried in the Natural Steps Cemetary in unmarked graves. I heard this story as a child, and it had been passed down from child to child. I don't know if this could be the Ponchatrain, but the stories are similar.
