Another bit of gear one might notice on the well-equipped Confederate sailor was a hatchet. If one were issued the leather load bearing gear (simular in form to the TA-50 gear of the 60's-70's) one would have a hatchet held in a holder simular to a carpenters belt hammer carry. It was part of the holster meant to carry either a Colt Navy or Walker. The hatchet was handy for parting rigging, removing bills of lading from cargo or repelling boarders. When held by its head the hatchet could be used as a baton to subdue those feeling frisky from their whiskey.

Along with the above the load bearing gear would be comprised of two cartridge boxes, one for pistol ammunition and one for Sharps rifle cartridges, the scabbard for the Courtney and Tennant cutlass; possibly an Ansley Bowie knife.
