A word of caution: You can not put any faith in anything that Admiral Porter said, be it in official reports or his memoirs. Porter liked to make up stories as he went. His version of the attack on the Cricket is way out of line with everyone else's version. Amazingly, the Cricket's log book was actually changed to match up with Porter's version. The original Cricket log entry makes the attack sound pretty routine, with the changed version matching Porter's Gettysburg-like affair. Porter has received a pass from his biographers, but a look at the record will show that the man was a pathological liar.
