Terry,
Something else that is odd can be found in Porter's "Incidents & Anecdotes" in his description of the 26th April attack on Cricket. He says "As I came out of the engine room, I saw a contraband holding on to Mrs. Holmes’s horse." Just before this he says that he asked "a guest" who had come along on the expedition to see some fighting whether he was now satisfied. Doesn't name the "guest." Is this a Mr & Mrs Holmes? Had they simply picked up the horse at some plantation owned by a "Mrs Holmes," I doubt they would have continued referring to it as "Mrs Holmes' horse." Sounds like she is aboard--maybe a Unionist fleeing on the gunboat?
