Terry: I just finished reading a book I picked up used called "A Gunboat named Diana" by Morris Raphael. It specifically addressed the issue of two vessels named Diana. pg 18 "...Apparently there were at least four vessels named Diana which were active along the lower Mississippi River and Gulf Coast areas, servicing such port cities as New Orleans, Mobile, Galveston, and Houston" pg 19: "...According to the enrollment record in 1858, the vessel was owned by three Houston men, John H. Sterrett, B.A. Shepherd, and F.W. Smith. But much to my dismay, I found out later that a Confederate vessel by the same name, which was originally owned by the same three men, was captured by the Yankees near Houston in 1865. This vessel was found sinking and abandoned by the Rebels....I was baffled, because the Diana I was writing about was scuttled in 1863 near Franklin, Louisiana.....Mrs. Peggy Fox, a Texas archivist, sent me some papers which solved the problem. The Houston Navigation Co., of Sterret, Shepherd and Smith, had at one time owned two vessels named Diana which were operating in different sectors. The Diana in the Teche campaign was a side-wheel steamer transport which was converted into a gunboat, while the other was a stern-wheel steamer that was transformed into a ram".
