Gary, it should be noted that this particular steamer, DIANA, which you refer to, was never in United States Navy service, and, as such, should not have the initials USS appended to her name. These initials were used only for vessels commissioned in the USN. The DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN NAVAL FIGHTING SHIPS, volume 2, indicates that there was only one USS DIANA commissioned during the war, which was, of course, the one that was captured by the Confederates while on a reconnaissance in Grand Lake and Atchafalaya River, March 28, 1863.
There is usually much confusion in relation to vessels that were commissioned by the Navies of both the United States and the Confederate States Navies and those that were under Army command.
Even one so called English expert of the CSS ALABAMA made the error of assuming that there were two vessels with the name CSS ALABAMA, when, in fact, there was only ever one. On the assumption that he claimed to be an expert, everyone else believed his word, without checking the facts. When I pointed this and many other errors out to him, he became quite abusive, which is often the case with "experts," when they are caught out.
