I might be mistaken, but I was under the belief that Lt. Shannon was in command due to the absense of Capt. Swett for some reason. Is that not correct? They must have suffered terrible casualties since the report I read says that a corporal was commanding until Lt. Key relieved him.
In any case that was a terrible day for many fime troops.
