You contradicted yourself on that one. You stated that the ONLY smoothbore not to fire shell was a 6 pounder then at the end you have them shooting it. I've got the field artillery manuals too. I know what was in the chest. I also have a 6 pounder and the chest if you want to come down and shoot. I've got a primo spot on Gaines' Mill Battlefield. Private property. We shoot and relic hunt there a lot. Shell for a smoothbore was a hollow roundball filled with a charge and shrapnel. The same for case shot. The difference being the cavity shape. I've dug case/shell with polygonal cavities. Both types of ammo were round.
