Smoothbores shot 3 kinds of ammo, solid shot, case shot, and cannister. Period. Shell is a cylindrical round with a sabot of many variations. The Whitworth for instance had the rifling pattern cast into the entire length of the bolt. Only rifled guns fired shell. On that note there are two very nice bronze 6 pounder smoothbores on Jackson's line at Fredericksburg that have been rifled for the James shell. They must not have seen a lot of use as the rifling is still very crisp. One was cast in Boston and the other I believe came from Ohio originally. I'd love to learn more about the rifling of existing tubes.
