16th - Eli CONGDON
In Response To: Wisconsin Pearsall brothers... ()

GrandView -

My Eli CONGDON was in the 16th Infantry - Co. B. Captured at the battle of Shiloh and imprisoned in Mobile AL.

Also two of his brothers served: Hannibal in the 1st Calvary Co. L and Sylvester in the 1st Heavy Artillery Co. B.

All three lived to survived the war but Eli's is the only line that continued of the three as no children lived to child-bearing age for either Hannibal or Sylvester.

Hannibal died while living in the Old Soldier's Home in Milwaukee and is buried in the military cemetery that surrounds it. Sylvester was in the insane asylum in Jefferson Co. WI when he died and papers recently found state he is buried in his hometown of Palmyra WI at Hillside cemetery, but we are in the process of trying to locate a gravesite as we don't believe he has/had a stone and would like to get one placed through V.A. Eli is buried at Hillside in Palmyra WI. This is in Jefferson Co. WI.

We do have a copy of a letter which Eli wrote home. The original is still in possession of a family member. We recently obtained a photograph of Eli, but not in military dress.

Willing to share info to those interested. Especially interested in those in Eli's unit, the 16th.

Thanks!
