Records of the 19th Wisconsin Muster Rolls do not seem to include Clarence Wicks, yet he is well documented as having been the man who shot and killed Confederate Prisoner Corporal G.W. Spears of the consolidated 1st Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi Infantry Regiment at Camp Randall Wi in the spring of 1862.

Clarence Wicks of Co. F, 36th WI Infantry enlisted in Feb of 1864 when the Regiment was raised. He was listed as a "Veteran Volunteer", meaning he had seen previous service. This would seem to indicate almost beyond doubt that Wicks of the 19th and Wicks of the 36th were one and the same man. Why he is not carried on the rolls of the 19th is a mystery to me, yet these were hand written records, and though they were pretty carefully kept, oversights almost certainly occurred. Also, Co. E of the 19th Wi had a number of recruits from Fox Lake, not far from Manchester where Wicks was from. This would also seem to point to a common identity of these two.
