Re: 195th Ohio and former Confederates

The compiled service record of the man I was interested in, Chesley B. Rakes, makes it clear he was not a POW at Camp Chase. Although he listed his residence variously as Martinsville, Henry Co., Va., and Taylorsville, Patrick Co., Va., he enlisted at Portsmouth, Ohio, for one years' service in the 186th Ohio in February 1865, and was soon after mustered in to the 195th Ohio. From his compiled service record it appears that at some point he left the 50th Va. Inf. and traveled north to Portsmouth where he enlisted and became eligible for a $100 bounty. When he was mustered out in December 1865, short of his one-year enlistment, he was paid the pro-rated amount of the bonus -- $66.67.
