Joseph Troutman 70th Ohio Infantry

I am looking for information on Joseph Troutman who was in the 70th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted in October of 1861 in West Union, Ohio. I have a copy of his service record and it says he deserted at Camp Dennison, Ohio and surendered to the Marshall in Adams County, Ohio. There is a story in my family that he got sick at Fort Pickering, Memphis, Tn and that is the last that his family heard from him. If he deserted at Camp Dennison how could he have been at Fort Pickering in Memphis? Is it possible that they caught him and returned him to his Regiment? He never came home again after the war so he died some time during the Civil War. His wife Harriet tried to claim a pension in the late 1800s saying that she had the letter saying that he had taken sick and was taken to a hospital. Unfortunately she could not produce the letter and was denied a pension.
