Re: Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic

Hello, Lee:
Yes, you do know me and you have met me recently. I am Richard Calland's wife, and your mother is his cousin. We were at your grandmother's funeral. We were just with your mother and father, as well as your grandpa Ray in Urbana. We had lunch with the Calland Cousins, who try to get together once a year.

We did meet you at your grandmother's funeral, but it was a hard time to just visit with someone. We really enjoy hearing about you from your mother. It would be very nice if we could all get together to get to know you and your family better.

I am not sure at this point about the Callands, but I know that Richard's mother, Leila McKinley Calland, had a grandfather who was in the 96th Ohio Vol. Infan. I would be very happy to help you with a search for a possible Civil War ancestor. If I may suggest, find out from your mother and your father who your great-grandparents were and go from there. Start with yourself and go backwards. Often that is the best way to start.

It helps to know that any male member of your family that was born between 1836-1848 would very possibly have been in the Civil War. Going backwards from your grandparents to their parents and so on. When you do run across someone that you think might have been living around the 1860s, I would suggest that you contact the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, OH, and have them look up the person. That number would be 419-332-2081. The RB Hayes Presidential Library has the largest compilation of Ohio Civil War soldiers. They also have a great obituary index, also.

I hope this helps. You may contact me personally at jcall@cros.net. I do have some other items that may help you. Glad to hear from you.

Janett Calland
