My GGGrandfather was Pvt John F. Owens ofthe Ohio 5th Cav until June 6th 1862. In Aug. 13, 1862 he re enlisted for 3 years in the 44th Ohio VI, Co. D. On Jan 4th, 1864, he transferred to Co. D, 8th Ohio Cav.
John F. Owens was from Zenia, Ohio. His discharge lists him as a musician. I wondered if he was captured at the Beverly Raid in Jan 1865 and if so if he returned to the regiment. His discharge is dated May, 30, 1865 from Clarksburg, W. VA. His discharge also states he was enrolled in Frank Moore's Co. D and was a Saddler when he was enrolled.
I also wonder if i have any relation to Wesley Owens who became Col. of the 8th Ohio Cav. Wesley Owens is listedd as having been a capt. in the 5th US Cav. prior to his tranfer to the 8th Ohio.
My family were pioneers (Owens' and Stevenson's) in Greene Co. Ohio in 1811-13. Ira Owens wrote a book on Greene county soldiers in the late War re: the 74th Ohio VI. His father was a Capt. for a brieg time of the 74th. I also have a David Stevenson from Greene Co. Ohio who enlisted on Sept. 23rd 1861 at Camp Dennison Ohio, but was in Co. L 3rd NY Cav. He was discharged after 3 years at Bermuda Hundred on Sept. 22nd 1864 and returned to Xenia, OH to vote in the presidential election that year. His younger sister (Ada Stevenson)lived to be 106 (1858 to 1964) and spoke to me of seeing Lincoln's funeral train travel through Xenia, OH in 1865, when I was about 9-10 years old. I was born in April 1953.
If you can give me any assistance, I would greatly appreciate it. I have been to the Xenia Co. Courthouse and work with my mother on our family geneology.
I am also Sr. Vice Commander of the Dept. Of Kansas Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. I am a paleontologist and educator who currently lives in Lawrence, KS and am working on several paleontological and Civil war museum projects in Kansas and Lima, Peru.
