Re: 1st U.S. Cavalry in Detroit

Dear Mr. Martin: Thank you for the info. My great grandfather one Chas. F. Hagerman was not 17 when he enlisted in the First MI Cav. There is a lady in Kalamazoo, MI who is the widow of my late father's second cousin. She has my great grand father's Cavalry saber and his C.W. papers. One of the papers she has is the paper that Charles' mother (my great grandmother) gave her permission for him to go to war at age 15. He was born 1850 in Paw Paw, MI. The lady in Kalamazoo doesn't seem interested in letting me look at the papers thou I have asked her a few times. My Father, years and years back, sent to Washington and got Charles, military records (they looked like the real thing) However this was well before I became interested in documenting my family history. Do I have any recourse where it comes to the papers and personal items of my greatgrandfather, because I am a greatgranddaughter and she is not of blood. Thank you for your time.

I am sincerely, Kaye M. Hagerman-Stewart
