Re: Third Michigan cavalry uniforms

I have very little information on this. I do know that when the 2nd Michigan Cavalry was formed Samuel Sykes & Company of Detroit received a contract for 2700 Michiagn cavalry uniforms (Sykes did not make the caps). This would have been enough uniforms for about 3 cavalry regiments. I have always assumed that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Michiagn Cavalry Regiments received the Sykes made uniforms. Sykes may have made additional cavalry uniforms as well, but this has not been confirmed. No details exists on what the Sykes made cavalry uniforms looked like. I have seen information that Michiagn cavalry regiments often wore jackets with one false button hole. I have never seen any firm information on where these jackets came from, but these may have been the jackets made by Sykes. High collar are uncomfortable and often men had tailors alter their uniforms, and the one button jackets may have been high collared jackets that were re-tailored to suit the men.
