In Response To: Brooks Relatives ()

Maris Brooks enrolled at Jackson,MI when he was 24 years old. He joined the regiment at Lexington, KY, on October 17, 1864.

Company "C" was commanded by Captain Edwin C. Miles, 1st Lt. Charles A. Bailey, and 2nd Lt. Matthew B. Burger. Company "C" was stationed at camp (Ella Bishop) near Lexington, Kentucky from their arrival in December of 1863 through February of 1864. During March and April of 64 company "C" was "officially" in camp on the Big Sandy River, although they were ordered to Danville, Kentucky on March 12th. Lt. Burgher (Co. "C")is mentioned for gallantry of action during the June 9th attack Morgan's men at Mount Sterling. On June 30th of 64, they had returned to camp at Lexington where they remained until August 31st.

They are then reported as stationed at Mount Sterling until October 31st, 1864, while they embark upon Burbridges ill-fated Expedition to Saltville. November and December of 64 shows company "C" is again "stationed" at Lexington, although the records also show they were employed in clearing the Mount Sterling section of the state of guerillas..with skirmishes at Hazel Green, McCormick's Farm, Morristown, State Creek and then again at Hazel Green; all between Nov. 9th and 16th. On the 17th, the regiment was ordered to Crab Orchard, arriving there on the 20th, where it joined the Division, and began moving towards Cumberland Gap. From that point they moved to the Clinch River where they had a sharp fight on the 28th. While this is the early stage of Stoneman's Raid, on February 28th of 1865, company "C" is listed as stationed in Louisville. During March and April the company is headquartered at Caesar's Head, South Carolina. By June 30th, 1865, company "C" with the rest of the regiment is back at Pulaski, Tennessee. awaiting their muster out.

I hope this gives you a little more detail for Maris.

regards, Chuck
