Everyone who has responded has assumed that there would be military records concerning the murder - - but Chauncey was a civilian.

I would suggest contacting the Arkansas History Commission. They have files of the Arkansas Gazette on microfilm, and possibly other papers. Perhaps they could recommend a researcher to review the microfilmed newspapers from that era and see if there were any articles concerning the murder?
