12th Michigan Inf. Murder at Devalls Bluff?

My 4x Great Grandfather was Chauncey P. Earl (also Earle) He was from Niles, Michigan and did not serve in the war. 3 of his sons did, however. Byron, Edward, and later Lawrence. They were all with the 12th Michigan Inf. I believe Chauncey was visiting Lawrence at Devalls Bluff when he was murdered 11 Sep 1865. (There's really no other reason for him to be there in Arkansas) His body was taken back to Niles a year later and buried at Silverbrook Cemetery. His cause of death is listed as "willful murder". I was wondering where the heck I would go to find information about the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the incident? Does anyone know?

Thanks!
Hollie
