Thanks George,
My father's first cousin has the sword which Joseph B. Edelen carried when he was with the Maryland Militia in the immediate pre-war years. It was carried by his grandfather or someone at the Battle of Brandywine. I forget what that war was. Anyway, he told me that when Joseph was wounded in the face it was with a spent .36 ball, either a pistol bullet or a .36 cal ball that was a part of a "Buck and Ball" load from a Yankee smoothbore musket. It pierced his cheek (probably took out a tooth with it too), he spit it out and put it into his pocket, and finished the battle. I bet with a hole in his cheek and a knocked out tooth he was hurting ad good and pissed off too. Anyway, he made a watch fob out of the bullet and carried it the rest of his life. It was still in the family until some visiting aunt came by back in the '60s or '70s. When she left it was missing and has never been found. I thought you would find that interesting. I wish I could find a pic of him. I was told that according to his Pension file he was livin in Fairfax, Va in the 1880s. I know nothing else about him.
Later,
Dave
