Hello,
Some of my people also served in the 1st Maryland. This story was handed down to me from my grandmother, who was born and raised in Charles Co., Md.. Her aunt had been engaged to the young officer mentioned below. Anyway, I have no idea where Monterey Pass is but a Pvt. Jesse Edelen, my gr gr grandfather's 1st cousin or something like that, served in Co. "E", also of the 1st Maryland Cavalry. In either late '63 or '64 while out hunting horses he and his kinsman, Lt. Tip Edelen, ran into some yankees (I don't know if anyone else from the unit was with them or not). After a running fight they were cornered and surrounded. Beings the Union officer was from their neck of the woods (Charles and Pr. Georges Co.s, Md) he gave them a chance to surrender. Tip pulled his sword and said "I'll never surrender to a damned yankee!" and charged the yankees by himself. Naturally he was shot down. Young Jesse Edelen surrendered. He was sent to Point Lookout, Md., where he was held for a while until he escaped or was exchanged, I forget which. That action, and what Tip and Jesse did, was related to the family because the Union officer personally escorted either Tip's body or his personal possesions, I forget which, to Lt. "Tip" Edelen's family. Some say, even a book out there, that his real name was William Marshal Edelen. My grandmother told me that if she remembered correctly his real name was William Henry Harrison Edelen. Both he and William Marshall Edelen existed and both served the Southern Cause.
Take care,
Dave
So, I wonder if you ancestor was in on that little outing and was sent to Point Lookout with my guy? Just a thought.
