Hello all,
My great great grandfather's cousin, Pvt. Jessie R. Edelen, served in Co. "E", 1st Maryland cavalry. Does anyone know much about this unit? Did they have a special uniform of their own, issued by home, or Maryland, or did they just wear standard Government issue uniforms like the Richmond Type I, II, and III jackets, etc.? I wonder if they had any trim on their jackets?
By the way, my g.g.grandfather was Joseph Benidict Edelen, who was a 1st lieutenant with Co "H" ("Washington Volunteers") in the Maryland Guard Zuaves or something like that. When Lincoln imprisoned the Maryland legislature and had the Maryland Militia disbanded, his company crossed the Potomac and wound up being Co. "H" (again, the "Washington Vols"), 7th Virginia Infantry.
Thanks,
Dave
