The Maryland in the Civil War Message Board

Re: As every school boy and girl should know...

My Great-Great Grandfather Capt Frank A Bond, 1st MD Cav, Company A joined the CSA armed forces after this incident in Baltimore. Like many Marylanders he had southern sympathies but after the Baltimore incident many galvanized and took up arms as they truly believed they were defending their families, friends, and homes against an invading army.

This is one of the major turning points in Maryland that caused many a brother to fight brother.

The State of Maryland was under martial law and many a Marylander was arrested without charges after Lincoln suspended “Habeas Corps”. Maryland was a state under siege in which the rule of law no longer matter to federal officials. Lincoln vowed to keep the union together even if it meant violating the laws that framed the US Constitution.

Respectfully,
Mark Bond
