The Kansas in the Civil War Message Board

A Few Gentle Words...

No one appreciates the contributors to these message boards more than I. When possible I attempt to read as many of the daily postings as I can, and I find myself both informed and entertained by them.

I do not want to discourage participation by what I'm about to write and I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings. I'd like to ask that those of you who have extremely large numbers of postings on one or more of the message boards, review your posts and determine if they might be reduced by combining your postings into fewer messages or whether your posting was necessary at all.

I must tell you that I've had a few complaints or concerns expressed from some very valuable contributors to these sites that the historical integrity of the sites might be jeopardized by too much "light hearted" banter and/or the domination of a site by one or a few posters.

The next time you see a posting, which may or may not be in your area of expertise, may I ask that you resist posting immediately with something like "I don't know, but you might try..." or "Sure wish I could help, but ..." and see if some others on the message boards might have something valuable to contribute.

I am sure some of our visitors and contributors who would like to post, will "pitch in" if they see a message, to which, no one has responded.

We have had a decline in the number of postings by new visitors and a drop-off in postings by some of our old contributors due to the "filling" of some of the sites with too many postings by a single contributor.

If you are a high-frequency poster, please do not stop posting, just slow down a little the messages which are unnecessary.

Thanks for your consideration and your support.

Jim
