My gggrandfather enlisted in 1 Wisconsin Cal. Co.G, in 1861. He had arrived in spring 61, from Norway, and was supposed to be under the supervision on his uncle. Since the uncle opposed the war, he ran off and enlisted-under the name Thomas Anfinson/Aufenson. This name change proved problematic as Charles Anfinson Brighton attempted to gain his pension-he had to prove his identity to the Govt. His pension application packet has several letters and affidavits from service mates, some who remember him as
"the little Norwegian who used to sing The Song of All Songs" There is also a reference to him going to a GAR and all his buddies requesting him to sing it. I guess that song at least was well known among his Company!
