Re: Thomas Moonlight and important places

Each year there is a Memorial Service (10:30 a.m.) on the Saturday closest to the date of the engagement. This year it falls on the actual date (17 July).

The service typically consists of the presentation of colors, an invocation, a brief (7-12 minute) talk on some aspect of the engagement (or development of the historic site or a musical program), the playing of "Taps" and a rifle salute and cannon salute for those who died here (most of whom are still buried here), and retirement of the colors; for each of the past four years, this is followed by a ribbon cutting opening a new interpretive area or feature.

This service is shortly followed by the Friends of Honey Springs annual luncheon (sandwich, salad, and desert buffet open to all who attend) and that is followed by the Friends' annual business meeting (15 minutes) and Board meeting (10 minutes).

For the past five years, around 1:30 or 2:00 the Sneed-Reeves Camp #1417 S.C.V. (from Oklahoma City) has held its July meeting on the grounds (as some of the members are also part of the artillery crew which provides one of the salutes).

In 1988 and from 1990 through 1999 there was a full-scale reenactment held every third year in July. However, beginning in 2001, the triennial reenactments co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Historical Society have been held on the last Saturday in September and the following day (which is sometimes October 1). The next full reenactment here will be Sat.-Sun. 24-25 September 2005. (The 2004 reenactment will be at Cabin Creek, north of Pensacola -- which is in Mayes County east of Adair.)

Hope this answers you question?

Ralph
