The Kansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Thomas Moonlight and important places

Matt,

My initial idea is to perhaps follow the path followed by Thomas and visit the places he mentions in his Civil War experiences. The likely places in the Kansas area I think will include Kansas City, Topeka, Weston, Leavenworth, Westport, Mound city, Mine Creek, Abilene (to see the Moonlight community - cannot find much about this) and down toward the Arkansas and Oklahoma borders if possible and over toward Denver. Depending upon the ease of travel and time constraints.

Have not been to Kansas before but have been to the US twice. Once travelling from the East Coast to the West Coast by Greyhound bus and the other down the East Coast from Toronto to Georgia again by bus. I remember visiting the Smithsonian in Washington and not fully recognising the significance of the exhibits and the Civil War flags. Of course I knew nothing of the story of Col. Moonlight or much about the Civil War in general. At that time "Gone With The Wind" would have been my only reference point. In Atlanta I had one of those photos taken as an old fashioned cowboy. I preferred the cowboy offer to being photographed in Confederate uniform. A strange perception at that time particularly when not knowing my ancestors story as I do now.

In general I am also open to suggestions and further information of places of interest.
