Re: Resolved Fuller / 11th Kansas Cavalry

Thank you, Mr. Nichols and Mr. Martin, for your suggestions and insight. How or even where Mr. Fuller died is still a mystery, at least to me, but I, too, have read the KS Adjutant General's and other reports, including various parts of books in the "War of the Rebellion Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" series. What I've learned is that the finals days of the pursuit of Price were beyond chaotic, with lots of confusion among the various Kansas forces' bickering leadership. I wonder if he had been sent out as a scout or on a forage mission, given what I've read.

I'm not a Civil War expert, however, and am looking at Co. D, 11th KS Cavalry in my research of Oskaloosa, KS, 1855-1865, and one of the town's founders, Jesse Newell, in particular, who was a Jim Lane sort of free-stater and probably a Jayhawker. Again, I am not related to Resolved Fuller and have no first-hand information, but he was an interesting free-state player in tiny Oskaloosa. I have been in touch (via ancestry.com) with descendants, who had information that Mr. Fuller was killed by "bushwackers," which does make sense, given what was going on. They continue their research.

Resolved Fuller wrote lots of letters during his service, apparently, and his wife would report bits of them to the local newspaper editor for the local war news. In 1859, Fuller was part of an escort (from Oskaloosa about 20 miles to Lawrence) for the John Doy (Underground Railroad-related) rescue party. In 1856, he was thrown in jail in Lecompton for his free-state participation in the "Battle" of Hickory Point, near Oskaloosa. He wrote an affidavit to the Territorial Kansas Governor about the attack on Newell by border ruffians/U.S. troops from South Carolina, etc. His Oct. 20 letter to his adult daughter around the time of the Westport battle is all the more sad because his wife, Olthenia Curtis Fuller, had died that March (1864), leaving eight children soon to be orphaned.

Thanks again for the help,
Liz Leech
