Howard,
I had one direct ancestor who fought in the Civil War: William Henry Musick of Co C of the 106th IL Inf. He was captured by Forrest while guarding the M&O near Jackson, TN. He spent the next few years at Benton Barrack's, in St Louis, until he and his fellows were exchanged for Confederate POWs (following the Fall of Vicksburg). He then rejoined his unit in Arkansas in time for the march to Little Rock. He is buried in the Deay/Vitt Cemetery just south of Eudora, Kansas. He is the basis for my menmbership in the SUV.
My membership in the SCV is lateral, and is based on my direct great-grandfather, Burton Maxfield Porter's, double cousin, Samuel Burton McFerrin. Samuel Burton served in first in the 8th btln MO Inf (CSA), and then in the 9th MO Inf (CSA). He saw duty in Arkansas, and in the Red River Campaign and the Camden Expedition. Samuel Burton was from Cass County, Missouri.
