Re: Welch and Macy -- KIA Cherokee Nation

Thanks Sandra! That helps a lot. Particularly the reference to Cabin Creek. The Timber Hills site I mentioned north of Ketchum OK was a camping spot on the Ft Scott-Ft Gibson Road (aka Texas Road or Emmigrants Road), ten miles northeast of Cabin Creek Crossing. There was an encounter there prior to the 1st Battle of Cabin Creek when a Union squadron led by Lt Luke Parsons captured Confederate Cherokee scouts who were on Timbered Hill watching for the supply train from Ft Scott. The Confederates were waiting at Cabin Creek but were routed by the 1st Kansas Colored, supported by artillery, who were escorting the train to Ft Gibson. The 2nd Colorado Cav camped at Timbered Hill on their way to Ft Scott after pursuing Price's retreating army all the way to the Arkansas River just above Ft Smith in 1864.

By the way, the "C.N." doesn't help much in Indian Territory since it is the same abbreviation for Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Nations. In this case, I knew it was in the Cherokee Nation but where trees are scarce, names like Timbered Hill or Hills and names followed by "Grove" or "Prairie" are very common. There is another Timbered Hill within 20 miles of this one but it is not on a major thoroughfare of the day.

Thanks again for the help!

Ken
