South Carolinians in Kansas

The Charleston Daily Courier, 4 Jul 1856, p. 2, c. 1, published a letter of Warren D. Wilkes, dated 1 July 1856, from Anderson, S.C., which had originally run in the Anderson Gazette and Advocate, copies of which newspaper are not now known to be in existence. Mr. Wilkes, or Major Wilkes, as he was often referred to, made his oft-repeated plea for funds and men for Kansas. The letter is very similar to those previosuly posted, and I will nno quote it verbatim. However, he does offer in this letter an estimate of the number of South Carolinians in Kansas, stating that "... South Carolina has sent to Kansas between two and three hundred young men of character and spirit..." For persons who may be interested in the full text of the letter, and have no access to the microfilm files of the Courier, I will be sending a copy of the article to the Kansas Historical Society.
