Starr quotes a nineteenth century source, an article by the U.S. Senator from Kansas, John J. Ingalls, and has the epitaph reading as this:

"One hero less on earth, / One angel more in heaven."

I'm guessing that there were people on both sides of the border that had a problem with that epitaph, regardless of how it is written!
