Bev, I think if you check the Kansas GenWeb site for veterans you may well find what you are looking for. If McCarthy was a Union Soldier, and that is likely, he then was a member of the GAR here in Kansas. He would have had a claim for any injuries or wounds recieved in the war. Also, I have in my manuscript of the GarryOwens a complete roster of the 7th US Cavalry in its Little Big Horn Campaign. I can verify for you that a Charles McCarthy was killed in Action June 25th, 1876 on Custer Hill while a member of Lt. Calhouns Company L.
