The Kansas in the Civil War Message Board

G-G grandfather from Lillis, KS

I just found this message board today, and am so happy that perhaps people here can point me in the right direction. My g-g grandfather was Charles McCarthy from the Irish Settlement near Lillis, Kansas. I've been told that he, his son and his brother joined the Union Side during the Civil War, but I don't know WHERE they joined. I've also been told that he was blinded in battle, so he went back to finish out his days in that settlement, but that his brother decided to stay in the Army after the war was over. And that he was killed with Custer at The Little Big Horn.
Marshall County is erecting a Veteran's Memorial, and I'd REALLY like to have a "brick" placed there in honor of him, but I have no idea of his rank, etc. I can't even remember where I heard the story about him and his brother - none of the family seems to be familiar with it. Please, tell me where to start.
